The Aquitaine region of France is traditionally known for it's fine wines. However, there is more to this area than just grapes!
The Dordogne is known as the department of 1001 Chateaux and, indeed, there are 1001! Many Chateaux are open to the public and are well worth a visit - even wandering in their beautifully laid out formal gardens can be a real treat on a fine day.
The department is also known as The Perigord and is split into different areas. The Perigord Poupre is so named for it's abundance of red wone grapes. The Perigord Noir is named for it's abundance of truffles and walnuts. The Perigord Blanc has vast limestone resources. The Perigord Vert is so named for it's vast forests and green fields.
In addition to all this are the very regional specialities of Foie Gras and Cepe mushrooms - a gourmets delight!
